Everyone gives Hiroshima
four hours.
That is the mistake.

Start with the Peace Memorial Park — the museum, the National Peace Memorial Hall, the cenotaph and the Genbaku Dome — and allow half a day, not an hour. It is not in the list below because it is not something to rank; everything else in the city and on Miyajima is, and here it is in order.

   The single best day out from Hiroshima and the reason two days beats one.

2. 02

   An okonomiyaki counter — not the food court

   Hiroshima okonomiyaki is layered rather than mixed and contains noodles; that is the whole difference from the Osaka style, and it is the city's one genuinely distinctive thing to eat.

   Carp baseball at Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium

   Widely described as the best atmosphere in Japanese baseball, and it appears in essentially no English list of things to do in Hiroshima.

   Mitaki-dera — the three-waterfall temple

   Ranked 9th on TripAdvisor's list for this city by the people who actually went, and absent from every English listicle.

   Orizuru Tower

   This is where the castle's lost view went, and with the keep shut it is now the city's main paid viewpoint.

   Mount Misen and the Miyajima ropeway

   Worth it if you have a clear day and half a day spare; not if you are squeezing the island into an afternoon.

   Hondori and the covered arcades

   Half a kilometre of roofed shopping street running from the Peace Park end to Hatchobori.

Every time above is a verified 2026 figure, not a guess: the museum's first morning slot needs a reservation, the castle keep closed in March 2026, and Miyajima runs on the tide, not the clock.

   Hiroshima Castle's keep closed to the public on 22 March 2026 — after 68 years — because the 1958 reinforced-concrete reconstruction had deteriorated and could no longer be kept open safely. A wooden rebuild is the city's leading option but has not been decided — the surveys alone run to about FY2030. The grounds, the moat, the bomb-scarred stone walls and the Ninomaru reconstruction are all still open, and all still free. The tower you came to go inside is not. Go for 45 minutes, spend nothing, and do not walk across town for a view that no longer exists. Guides written before March 2026 still send you up it.

   Miyajima: high tide or low tide?

   Miyajima runs on the tide, not the clock. Above 250cm the Great Torii appears to float and the shrine's corridors stand over water; below 100cm you can walk out across the sand to the gate's legs. Those are the Miyajima Tourist Association's own published thresholds, read against its own tide table — which is the Hiroshima Port table, with Miyajima running slightly earlier. A generic tide app uses a different reference point, so its numbers look similar and are not comparable. Check the official table before you book the ferry, not after. If you can only have one, take the high tide — the floating gate is the photograph you came for, and standing under it is the novelty. But the flat middle band gives you neither, and that is the one nobody warns you about.

   Miyajima — day trip or stay the night?

   The most consistently repeated upgrade advice for this region, and it is right. The island's distinctive asset — the torii lit after dark, deer in empty streets, the shops shut and the queues gone — is only available to people who sleep there. If you have three days in Hiroshima, spend one night on the island. If you have two, day-trip it and do not feel short-changed.
