Every logistics decision this city asks you to make, each one with a price, a break-even and a verdict. The streetcar fare changed in February 2025 and most pages ranking for Hiroshima are still quoting the old scale. The JR Pass now costs ¥3,000 more through overseas agencies than on the official site. Start wherever your money is going.
Two nights is the right shape: one day for the Peace Park and the city, one for Miyajima timed to the tide. Budget roughly ¥12,000–18,000 (about $76–114) per person per day on top of the room and the ¥200-a-night lodging tax. Buy the ¥700 streetcar day pass only from your third ride, and skip the national JR Pass — it loses ¥10,480–13,240 against cash tickets. The airport is 50km out and the bus is ¥1,500, so most people arrive by shinkansen instead.

Four things moved recently and almost nothing on the first page of Google reflects any of them. Hiroden went to a flat ¥240 fare on 1 February 2025 and the one page-one result quoting a streetcar fare is still on the old scale. The tram terminal moved onto the station's second floor on 3 August 2025, which invalidates every route description written before then. The Maple-loop bus abolished its colour routes on 18 July 2026. And Hiroshima Prefecture introduced a ¥200 per person per night lodging tax on 1 April 2026 that hotels add on top — expect to be asked for it at the desk even if you prepaid.
Hiroshima is a comfortable, well-run, entirely ordinary mid-size Japanese city. The bomb took the old fabric and the rebuild was practical rather than picturesque. Come for the Peace Park, the island and the food — not for the streetscapes. The mistake almost everyone makes is giving the important part four hours and the ordinary part none.

Straight answersHow many days do you need in Hiroshima?
Two nights. One full day covers the Peace Memorial Park and the museum properly — that is a half day on its own at minimum — and one covers Miyajima timed to the tide. A single day trip works logistically but costs you the museum, which needs two hours and repays three. Allow two hours in the Peace Memorial Museum, three if you read properly, and leave the two hours after it empty. At the museum's own published peak, 11:00 to 15:00, crowding inside has made it hard to move through the galleries at all. Everyone who budgeted 45 minutes regrets it.
How much does a trip to Hiroshima cost per day?
Roughly ¥12,000–18,000 per person per day (about $76–114) on top of the room, for a normal traveller doing one paid sight, one okonomiyaki dinner and a couple of tram rides. Rooms run about ¥3,800 for a hostel bed, ~¥9,500 for a business 3-star near the station and ~¥26,000 for a 4-star in Naka-ku, plus ¥200 a night in lodging tax. Is the JR Pass worth it for Hiroshima?
No — it loses money. A cash Tokyo⇄Hiroshima return is ¥36,760 unreserved or ¥39,520 on reserved Nozomi, against ¥50,000 for a 7-day pass bought direct, so you are down ¥10,480–13,240 — and ¥3,000 more through an agency. Buy the ¥17,000 JR Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass instead, which is less than a cash Osaka return and includes the JR Miyajima ferry.
Do I need a Hiroden day pass?
Only if you will ride three or more times — at a flat ¥240 the ¥700 pass breaks even at exactly three. If your day includes Miyajima, take a ¥1,000 pass instead: a bare-minimum island day costs ¥1,120 paid per ride. And if you hold a JR Pass, buy nothing — your whole day costs ¥100 in visitor tax.
What is the cheapest way to get from Hiroshima Airport to the city?
The limousine bus, ¥1,500 for an adult, 45–50 minutes to Hiroshima Station for the ~50km, with departures timed to flight arrivals. You can tap a contactless credit or debit card as you board. Most travellers from Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka skip the airport and take the shinkansen.
When is the best time to visit Hiroshima?
Late November into early December — arriving around 25 November catches Momijidani's roughly 700 maples at peak and Shukkeien turning a few days later, at a comfortable 17.7°C daily maximum with only 69.3mm of rain. Avoid about 6 June to 19 July, the rainy season, when July alone brings 279.8mm.
Is Hiroshima expensive compared with Kyoto or Tokyo?
No — it is one of the cheapest major stops on the Sanyo shinkansen line. The Peace Memorial Museum is ¥200, Senjokaku (Hokoku Shrine) on Miyajima is ¥100, and the whole Peace Memorial Park is free. Hiroshima's lodging tax is ¥200 a night against Kyoto's top band of ¥10,000 since 1 March 2026. Getting here is the expensive part.
