Where to stay in Hiroshima:
the station, unless you have three days.
Hiroshima has some of the best-value beds on the Sanyo line and the island next door has some of the worst. That gap — Booking's own Hiroshima listings start around ¥5,500 against about ¥12,000 for Miyajima — is the entire decision. And since 1 April 2026 there is a ¥200 per person per night prefectural tax that no prepaid booking total includes.
Two nights: stay near Hiroshima Station. A business 3-star runs about ¥9,500 (roughly $60), the tram terminal is on the building's second floor since August 2025, and you are 15 minutes from the Peace Memorial Park for ¥240. Three nights: give one of them to Miyajima, where a ryokan with two meals runs about ¥44,000 and buys you the only thing the island cannot sell a day-tripper. Budget ¥200 per person per night in prefectural lodging tax on any room over ¥6,000 per person — it is collected at the desk, not by your booking site.
¥200 a night, and you pay it at the desk
The tax nobody's booking showsThis is new, it is prefecture-wide, and it is not in your prepaid total. If you booked through an OTA and thought you were done paying, you were not.
Hiroshima Prefecture introduced a ¥200 per person per night accommodation tax on 1 April 2026, on rooms of ¥6,000 or more per person before tax and meals. It applies across the prefecture — the city, Miyajima, Onomichi — and it is not included in prepaid booking totals, so you will be asked for it at check-in. There is no separate Hiroshima city lodging tax.
The threshold is the interesting part, and it is where most guides will get this wrong: the ¥6,000 is per person, before tax and meals. A ¥3,800 hostel bed is under it and pays nothing. A ¥9,500 business twin split two ways is ¥4,750 a head and also pays nothing. A ¥26,000 four-star in Naka-ku shared by two is ¥13,000 a head and pays. School-trip participants and their supervising staff are exempt outright.
The ryokan case is genuinely ambiguous and worth asking about. A Miyajima ryokan at ¥44,000 with two meals is quoted as a per-person, meals-included rate, and meals are excluded from the ¥6,000 calculation — so what matters is the room portion, which the property has to separate out. Ask when you book rather than at checkout.
For scale: Kyoto raised its own lodging tax to a top band of ¥10,000 on 1 March 2026. Hiroshima at ¥200 is, in the context of Japanese city taxes in 2026, a genuine value story rather than a grievance.

Who actually pays the ¥200

The counter-intuitive result is that a couple sharing a ¥9,500 business twin pays no lodging tax at all, while the same person alone in the same room pays ¥200 a night. If your booking sits near the line, the per-person split is what decides it.
Should you sleep on Miyajima?
The island questionYes, once, if you have three days. No, if you have two. The argument is not about the room — it is about which hours of the island you get.
Miyajima between 10:00 and 15:00 is a queue with an island attached. The last ferries take the crowds away and take the open shops with them, so a 16:00 arrival gets you an island with nothing on it. The torii lit after dark, and the deer in empty streets, are only available if you sleep there.
The closing times make the case better than any adjective can. Senjokaku shuts at 16:30, the ropeway's last descent is 16:30, the Treasure Hall and Daisho-in close at 17:00, and Itsukushima Shrine at 18:00. The island's entire commercial and religious apparatus shuts between 16:00 and 18:00 — which means a day-tripper's Miyajima is precisely the window when it is at its busiest.
Two honest caveats, because the overnight case is usually oversold. First, the last JR ferry off the island is 22:14, so you can see the torii lit and still leave — the illumination comes on 30 minutes after sunset and goes off at 23:00, and you cannot enter the shrine during it in any case. What you cannot buy at any price is the 06:30 morning, when Itsukushima Shrine opens and the first ferry crowds do not land until about 09:00. Second, if you stay over, eat and shop before 17:00 — there is very little food afterwards and your ryokan dinner may be the only option going.
