Shukkeien:
the best ¥350 in Hiroshima.
A compressed 1620 stroll garden ten minutes east of the castle, with a pond loop that takes 40 unhurried minutes. ¥350 — free if you are 65+ with ID or in high school and under — and ¥660 combined with the Prefectural Art Museum next door, which saves you ¥200.
Yes, at ¥350 ($2.22) — and give it the 40 minutes it deserves rather than the 15 most itineraries allow. University students pay ¥150, and high school and under go free (since 14 April 2025), as do 65+ with ID. Shukkeien is a 1620 daimyo stroll garden laid out so that the view changes every few paces around one pond. It shares a site with the Prefectural Art Museum and the ¥660 combined ticket saves ¥200, which makes the pair the best wet-or-hot afternoon in central Hiroshima.
Why ¥350 is the easiest yes in the city
The verdictBecause everything else worth 40 minutes in central Hiroshima is either free and thin, or expensive and elsewhere.
Shukkeien is small — you can see one end from the other — and that is the point. The name means roughly "shrunken scenery": a lake, a mountain, valleys and bridges compressed into a few hectares, laid out in 1620 for the Asano lords, with a path that keeps hiding and re-revealing the same pond. Walked slowly it is 40 minutes. Walked as a photograph stop it is 12, and you will have wasted it.
The city context matters here. Hiroshima is a comfortable, well-run, entirely ordinary mid-size Japanese city. The bomb took the old fabric and the rebuild was practical rather than picturesque. Come for the Peace Park, the island and the food — not for the streetscapes. The mistake almost everyone makes is giving the important part four hours and the ordinary part none.
Shukkeien is one of the few places in central Hiroshima that is deliberately, historically beautiful rather than merely functional. It was destroyed on 6 August 1945 — it sits about 1.3km from the hypocentre and became a refuge for the injured, many of whom died in it — and it was rebuilt and reopened in 1951. Several trees in the garden survived the blast. Nothing on site announces this loudly, which is characteristic of the city.

Shukkeien against the other 40 minutes you could spend
ComparedEvery option here is within about 15 minutes of the others, in the block of central Hiroshima north of the Peace Park.
| Option | Price | Time | Best in | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shukkeien Garden | ¥350 ($2.22) · free 65+ and under-18 | 40 min | Cherry 28 Mar–8 Apr · maple late Nov to early Dec · first thing in the morning, any month | WORTH IT |
| Hiroshima Castle grounds | Free | 45 min | Cherry season — the keep is closed permanently | DEPENDS |
| Prefectural Art Museum (next door) | ¥510 ($3.23) · ¥660 with the garden | 60 min | Rain, and the August heat | DEPENDS |
| Hondori arcade | Free | 30 min | Rain — it is roofed for half a kilometre | DEPENDS |
| Mitaki-dera | Free | 90 min with travel | Rain and late November | WORTH IT |
| Orizuru Tower | ¥2,200 + ¥100 crane fee | 45 min | Clear late afternoon | DEPENDS |
The obvious pairing is castle grounds → Shukkeien → art museum, about two and a half hours end to end for ¥660 ($4.19) using the combined ticket. It is the standard second half of a Peace Park day, and it costs less than a third of what Orizuru Tower alone now charges.

Shukkeien Garden — common questions
Straight answersHow much is Shukkeien Garden?
¥350 ($2.22) for an adult, ¥150 for university students, and free for high school and under and for anyone 65+ with ID — school-age entry has been free since 14 April 2025. Entry is free for everyone on 4 May and 3 November. The ¥660 combined ticket with the Prefectural Art Museum next door saves ¥200.
How long do you need at Shukkeien?
40 minutes for the pond loop at a pace that lets the framed views work. Ninety minutes if you sit at the tea house or you have come for photographs. Fifteen minutes is enough to see it and not enough to get anything from it.
Is Shukkeien worth visiting?
Yes. At ¥350 it is the easiest yes in the city, and it is the antidote to the disappointment of the closed castle keep ten minutes away. Skip it only if you have under two hours in Hiroshima, in which case the Peace Park takes all of them.
How do you get to Shukkeien from Hiroshima Station?
Hiroden Hakushima line to Shukkeien-mae, which is a two-minute walk from the gate, at the flat ¥240 ($1.52) fare. Walking takes about 15 minutes and is flat the whole way. Hiroden went to a flat ¥240 adult / ¥120 child fare on 1 February 2025, its first revision since 2017, replacing a ¥220 flat fare in the city and a distance scale on the Miyajima line. Since 1 July 2026 IC-card riders tap on and off. The all-day streetcar pass is ¥700, so it pays from your third ride — which is exactly what a Peace Park, castle and station day comes to.
When is Shukkeien open?
Every day except 29–31 December — unlike the art museums, it is open on Mondays, which makes it the reliable Monday option in central Hiroshima. Closing time moves with the season, so we do not reprint it: check the garden's site or the Google Maps link, and arrive with at least 40 minutes in hand.
Can you visit Shukkeien and the art museum together?
Yes, and you should: the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum is on the same site and the combined ticket is ¥660 ($4.19) against ¥350 + ¥510 separately, so it saves ¥200. Allow about 100 minutes for both. Note the museum closes on Mondays and the garden does not.
When is the best time to visit Shukkeien?
Cherry blossom lands roughly 28 March to 8 April (JMA normals: first bloom 25 March, full bloom 3 April), and Shukkeien's maple peaks late November to early December — later than Momijidani's mid-to-late November, so an arrival around 25 November catches both. Any month, the first hour after opening is the quiet one. In August go early in the morning: the average daily maximum is 32.8°C and there is very little shade.
Is Shukkeien good for kids?
Reasonably — 40 minutes, carp in the pond, arched bridges and a short loop with no way to get lost. There is nothing to climb and nothing interactive, so under-sixes will be done in 20 minutes. Hiroshima with kids has better options for a full afternoon.
