A steep port town of stone stairs, small temples, secondhand bookshops and well-fed cats, with a ropeway up to Senkoji and a slow descent through the Temple Walk. It is also where the Shimanami Kaido starts — which is why so many people arrive having planned the wrong trip.

Quick answer · 30 sec
WORTH IT if you give it the whole day

Onomichi is the best full-day trip from Hiroshima and a poor half-day one — the journey is roughly 1h30 each way on the local line, so anything less than six hours on the ground wastes the ride. Do it in the one sensible order: ropeway up, then walk down through the temples, the Path of Literature and Cat Alley, which takes 2–3 unhurried hours. Buy the ropeway one way at ¥500 ($3.17), not the ¥700 return. One date to check first: the ropeway is closed 7–25 December 2026 for annual inspection.

What Onomichi is, and what it is not

Answer first

It is a working port town built up a hill so steep that most of it is reached by staircase, with about twenty-five temples threaded along one walking route.

The shape of the place is the whole appeal. The Inland Sea is a few hundred metres from the station, the hill starts almost immediately behind it, and everything — houses, temples, cafés in converted houses — is stacked up that slope on alleys too narrow for cars. Senkoji Temple sits partway up with a huge boulder above it and the standard postcard view over the channel to Mukaishima.

The ropeway runs from near Ushitora Shrine to the top of the hill in about three minutes, and it costs ¥500 one way or ¥700 return for adults ($3.17 / $4.44), ¥250 / ¥350 for children, with preschoolers free accompanied by an adult. Holders of a JR-WEST RAIL PASS or a JAF card pay ¥450 / ¥630. Our call is the same one we make on Miyajima: buy one way, ride up, walk down. The ¥200 you save is the smaller half of the argument — the descent through the temples is the good part of the day, and it does not exist if you ride both ways.

🔴 The date most pages miss: the Senkoji ropeway is closed from 7 to 25 December 2026 for annual inspection and replacement repair work. The operator posted the notice on 4 August 2026 and says the inspection happens every December, but most English pages still assume it is running. If your dates fall in that window the trip still works — you can walk up in about 30 minutes, the operator's own figure. You just do it on foot, and you plan the day around a climb rather than a cable. We do not publish the ropeway's daily operating times; check mt-senkoji-rw.jp before you travel.

The Temple Walk links roughly 25 temples over about 2.5km of slope, and it is not a march — it is a route you drift down over two to three hours with stops. On the way you pass the Path of Literature, with stone-carved excerpts from writers associated with the town, and Neko no Hosomichi, the alley where painted cat stones are hidden in the walls and a substantial population of real cats does what cats do near a fishing port.

Two things people get wrong. First, Onomichi is not a stop on the way to somewhere else — it is the destination, and the Shimanami Kaido that starts here is a separate, much bigger commitment. Second, Onomichi ramen is a real regional style, soy-based with pork back fat floating on it, and the queues at the well-known shops are genuine — factor 30–40 minutes for lunch or eat at 11:15. Hiroshima oysters are a winter dish — roughly October to March, peaking December to February. Summer menus lean on Kaki Komachi, the prefecture's triploid oyster, and plenty of restaurants simply do not do oysters then. Supply is also thin right now: in autumn 2025 roughly 70% of farmed oysters in western Hiroshima Bay died, including stock meant for the 2026–27 season, and the big oyster festivals were cancelled in 2025 and 2026.

Three ways to reach Onomichi from Hiroshima

The choice is time against money against how much of the day you are prepared to spend seated. Every fare below is unverified — this table compares structure, not price.

Both shinkansen options become the obvious answer if you hold a rail pass, and neither is worth paying cash for on a single trip. The first DEPENDS resolves to yes if you are pass-holding or short of daylight; the second resolves to yes if you are pairing Onomichi with Tomonoura, which also runs through Fukuyama. Journey times in this section are indicative rail-line estimates, not timetable readings. Rail fares are left blank on purpose: we have not verified them against JR West's published table. Fares we did confirm with an operator — ferries, buses, ropeways, admissions — are printed and sourced at the foot of each page. A page that tells you a fare is unverified is more use than a page that guesses it.

One day in Onomichi, in the right order

The route
08:00

Leave Hiroshima Station

Hiroden line 1, 2, 5 or 6 gets you to the station for a flat ¥240. Take the earliest reasonable train you can face — the local run is roughly 1h30 and the day needs six hours at the other end.

09:40

Onomichi Station, then straight along the waterfront

Walk east along the channel for 10–15 minutes before you climb anything. The Inland Sea framing, with the ferries crossing to Mukaishima every few minutes, is what the hill views are of.

10:15

Ropeway up — one way, ¥500

About a 3-minute ride from near Ushitora Shrine. Buy one way at ¥500 rather than the ¥700 return, because the descent is the reason you came. ¥450 with a JR-WEST RAIL PASS. If you are here between 7 and 25 December 2026 the ropeway is shut for inspection — walk up in about 30 minutes instead.

10:30

The top, then Senkoji

Twenty minutes at the observation deck, then start down. Senkoji itself is a few minutes below the summit station, wedged under its boulder, and it is the single best-sited building in the town.

11:30

The Temple Walk, unhurried

Roughly 25 temples over about 2.5km of slope, plus the Path of Literature. Give it 2–3 hours and do not try to see all of them; four or five properly is a better day than twenty-five at a jog.

13:00

Onomichi ramen, and a queue

Soy-based, with pork back fat. Allow 30–40 minutes including the wait at the known shops, or eat at 11:15 and reverse the order of this and the temples.

14:30

Cat Alley and the bookshops

Neko no Hosomichi runs off the hillside path — painted cat stones hidden in the walls, real cats on the roofs. The converted-house cafés and secondhand bookshops around it are the town's other export.

15:30

The ferry to Mukaishima, if you want the sea

About 5 minutes across, running frequently, fare not verified. Ten minutes on the far bank and back is enough to say you crossed the first channel of the Shimanami Kaido without pretending you rode it.

16:30

Train back

Back on the local line for roughly 1h30, in Hiroshima for dinner. If you are going on to the islands instead, stop here and read the Shimanami page — the crossing is a different trip on a different day.

Onomichi — the questions people actually ask

Straight answers
How do I get from Hiroshima to Onomichi?

JR Sanyo local line, roughly 1h30, usually with one change at Itozaki. The faster option is the shinkansen to Shin-Onomichi (roughly 40 minutes) plus a 15-minute bus down to the town, which only makes financial sense with a rail pass. All fares are unverified — check JR West.

Is Onomichi worth a day trip from Hiroshima?

Yes, if you can give it the whole day. Three hours in Onomichi after a 1h30 journey is a poor trade; six or more hours on the ground makes it the best non-Miyajima trip in this section. If you only have half a day free, take Iwakuni at ~50 minutes instead.

How much is the Senkoji ropeway?

¥500 one way, ¥700 return for adults ($3.17 / $4.44), ¥250 / ¥350 for children, preschoolers free with an adult. A JR-WEST RAIL PASS or JAF card brings it to ¥450 / ¥630. The ride is about 3 minutes. Buy one way: the walk down through the temples takes 2–3 hours and is the best part of the day.

Is the Senkoji ropeway ever closed?

Yes — 7 to 25 December 2026, for annual inspection and replacement repair work; the operator says the inspection happens every December. The trip still works during the closure: you can walk up in about 30 minutes. We do not publish daily operating times — check mt-senkoji-rw.jp.

Where are the cats in Onomichi?

Neko no Hosomichi — Cat Alley — a lane of roughly 200 metres running off the hillside path below Senkoji, with painted cat stones set into the walls and a genuine resident cat population. It is on the Temple Walk descent, so you do not need to detour; allow 20 minutes and do not feed anything.

Is Onomichi where the Shimanami Kaido starts?

Yes, and this is the single biggest planning error in the region. The Shimanami Kaido is 70km from Onomichi to Imabari across six islands — a full day with an early start, or two relaxed ones. It is not an add-on to an Onomichi afternoon. Read the Shimanami page first.

What should I eat in Onomichi?

Onomichi ramen — a soy-based broth with pork back fat floating on the surface, distinct from anything you get in Hiroshima city. Budget 30–40 minutes including the queue at the known shops. Note that this is a different regional dish from Hiroshima's layered okonomiyaki, which is a city thing, not a coast thing.

Does Onomichi work in the rain?

Badly. The whole trip is stone steps, slopes and outdoor views, and wet stone stairs on that gradient are genuinely unpleasant. On a wet day take Kure, where both museums are indoors, or stay in the city — the rainy-day page has the options. Tsuyu, the rainy season, normally runs 6 June to 19 July, and July is the wettest month at 279.8mm, not August.

Staying over
The case for one night
in Onomichi is the 1h30
you would spend twice.

Three hours of round-trip rail is the whole argument for sleeping here. Stay a night and you get the hill at first light, the ferries starting up, and — if you are riding — a start on the Shimanami Kaido at 07:00 instead of 11:00, which is the difference between a 70km day that works and one that does not. The waterfront has a converted-warehouse hotel aimed at cyclists, plus ordinary business rooms near the station. One line to budget for: Hiroshima Prefecture introduced a ¥200 per person per night accommodation tax on 1 April 2026, on rooms of ¥6,000 or more per person before tax and meals; cheaper rooms and school trips are not taxed. It applies across the prefecture — the city, Miyajima, Onomichi. Hotels add it to the bill, and it may not be in a prepaid booking total, so expect to be asked for it at check-in. There is no separate Hiroshima city lodging tax.
